The Liturgical life of the Catholic Church revolves around the Eucharistic sacrifice and the Sacraments. The Church consists of seven sacraments: Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist, Penance, Anointing of the Sick, Matrimony and the Holy Orders (1).
The purpose of these sacraments is to make people holy, build up the body of Christ, and finally, to give worship to God but they also have a teaching function (1). These sacraments nourish, strengthen and express faith, imparting grace, accurate worship of God and the practice of charity (2).
Worship is integral to our lives as Catholics, when we engage in prayer and ritual, we are formed as a Church. Our sacramental rites are of primary importance while we are gathered.
Baptism, being the first and fundamental sacrament, and the gate to the other sacraments is the topic of this teaching resource.
Baptism is the purifying and sanctifying sacrament of rebirth (4). This sacrament is the means by which its recipients are incorporated into the church in a sacramental bond of unity. This translates as the "freeing of man from original sin and personal guilt", which makes the person a member of Christ and His Church (1).
